Gloria Smith was a member and leader of ACORN (and then ACO) from 1980 to present. She participated in local campaigns as well as national actions, actions in other cities, and national conventions. In this interview, she discusses an early campaign by ACORN to win busing services for students, talks about the work to recruit other members to the organization, shares her memories on the day to day work as a leader in the organization, and discusses why she believes ACORN was powerful. She also talks about her life in Little Rock before ACORN, her mother’s role in getting her involved in the organization (her mother joined first), and how ACORN changed her as a person.
