Faith Willams Arnold joined Chicago ACORN in 1996 when an organizer knocked on her door, shortly after she had begun running her own day care center. In this interview, she explains that after having her youngest son, she left her job at ATT Communications to work in the community. She says her mother instilled in her a deep sense of social justice. Bryn Seebird was her mentor. She recalls an action in the Chicago neighbhorood of Bellwood, when childcare providers, parents and children marched on the mayor’s office and demanded they be a part of regulating the child care industry in their community. This interview will be of interest to anyone interested in childcare workers and unionization, the relationship between labor unions and ACORN, and the history of community organizing in Chicago.
