Kristy Carter was an ACORN and ACV member in New Orleans from the mid-1990s on. In this interview, she talks about growing up in the lower 9th, how she got involved with ACORN, as well as various campaigns she worked on and actions she took as a member, including get out the vote work, phone banking, and protests. She discusses some of the issues in the community, such as difficulty getting business licenses and bank loans as well as rate hikes, bridge locking, and efforts to kick homeowners out of the Lower 9th. She also talks about her experiences of Hurricane Katrina and the work ACORN did to get information out to residents after the hurricane. Finally, she talks about the transition from ACORN to A Community Voice from her perspective on the ground.
