This is part 1 of Steve Bachmann’s oral history: Steve Bachmann was ACORN’s lawyer and General Counsel from 1976 through 2009 (with time away from ACORN from 1984-87). In this interview, Bachmann talks about his role as General Counsel, including setting up ACORN’s many legal structures; his legal support for the organization’s campaigns; and his provision of legal defense against the multiple attacks and investigations of the organization. He also talks about his perspective on ACORN’s demise, and his role in addressing some of the internal issues that came to the fore during the attacks on ACORN. Bachmann also discusses his artistic practice, including his decades’ long practice of producing paintings of ACORN leaders, staff, and activities. Finally, he reflects on the impact and importance of ACORN, and its historical context.
